August Gardening Tips & To-Do’s

August gardening can be different across the United States. In the north the annual and veggie gardens are winding down. Not here in Colorado, there is plenty of gardening time still available to us. We put together 4 gardening tips and to-do’s that you can do in August that will help keep your garden going strong into fall. 

Add Fall Color

Now’s the time to give your garden that late summer boost of color that can be needed. One of the best plants for this is the Garden Mum or Chrysanthemums, for those garden nerds out there. Here at City Floral Garden Center you can find them available in an almost unlimited selection of colors, shapes, and flower forms. Simply put them anywhere you need to add color like in a pot, planter or flower borders. The best part of them is their nectar-rich flowers attract a variety of pollinators including the migrating Monarch butterflies.

Replace Annual Flowers

By this time in the summer your annuals are probably struggling a little bit. Give those pots and planters a makeover by adding fresh, cool-season annual flowers. That way you can keep those colors popping right into fall.

Get those Weeds

We know, weeding is the least fun part of gardening—but the most essential, especially during the changing of the seasons. Those windy days become more frequent and are the perfect way for seeds to get around. If you have a ton of weeds in your garden, they are more than likely ready to seed, and the winds will help that process. If this is unchecked those pesky garden invaders will overtake your garden next year. The best time to pull the weeds is right after a rain or after you water the garden when the soil is moist. Be sure to remove the roots as the weed will just grow back with a vengeance. Covering the area with mulch or straw will help from preventing the weed from coming back.

Plant Perennials and Shrubs

The late summer is one of the better times to plant those perennials and shrubs. It’s easier for them to take root during the cooler, moist weather that we get in fall. That way next spring and summer they will be ready to bloom and show off those beautiful flowers. The best candidates are hydrangeas, Day-lilies, Peonies and Bearded Irises. When winter rolls around cover the roots and ground with either a thick layer of mulch or straw.
