4 Best Viburnums to Plant in Colorado

Viburnum shrubs are a very underrated shrub for a Colorado landscapes. They are the perfect shrub for interest starting in spring and going through fall. They have attractive foliage and their growth habits don’t require a whole lot of fussing over them. As an added plus most varieties have very beautiful, showy, fragrant flowers that will make anyone stop in their tracks.

If you are looking for that perfect shrub that can be used in almost any area of your yard, look no further than a viburnum. Here are 4 varieties that we carry at City Floral Garden Center, that will do well in most Colorado landscapes.

Summer Snowflake Viburnum

Summer snowflake is a beautiful long-flowering, medium-size shrub with a broadly rounded form. The tiered horizontal branches magnificently display the showy white flower clusters. The blooms for this variety bear a lot of white lacy capped blooms. These blooms start in mid-spring and continuing throughout the summer season. It also features highly ornamental red fruit that develops in the fall. A great addition to borders and work wonderfully as privacy screens.

Sparkler Arrowhead Viburnum

The Sparkler Arrowhead Viburnum is a densely branched, deciduous shrub with stunning, dark green, ruffled foliage. The foliage puts on a show in fall by turning bright yellow to red. The foliage isn’t the only thing that’s fantastic, the blooms are stunning as well. They are creamy white, flat-topped umbels that give way to large clusters of showy blue-black berries that the birds are sure to enjoy. All these things make the arrowhead a hardy and reliable hedge, screen or border background that’s ideal for urban landscapes or native gardens.

The foliage has its own impressive look to it and becomes a beautiful red and burgundy in autumn.

The Korean Spice Viburnum works well for shrub borders, as a backing for perennial beds, and in foundation plantings. Best planted near windows, patios and living areas to enjoy the fragrance.

The glossy, bright green leaves turn to a purplish red coloring during the fall months. A spectacular landscape specimen for sure and a favorite among gardeners around Colorado.
