Houseplant Spotlight: Dracaena

City Floral Dracaena Selection

Dracaena Features

The Dracaena is quite possibly the perfect group of houseplants, and for good reason. They are among the easiest and most common houseplant around. At City Floral Garden Center, you’ll find sizes of dracaenas from tiny cute little guys to giant trees up to 6 feet in height. The smaller younger plants make adorable little additions to shelves or tabletops, while the older larger dracaenas develop woody stems that make them more tree-like. Their spikey, sword-like leaves will add an elegant splash of texture to your home.

Not only does its dramatic foliage brighten up any room, dracaenas also can help to improve air quality in your home. It removes such pollutants like benzene, formaldehyde, trichloroethylene, xylene and toluene from the air.

Growing a Dracaena

Dracaena are an easy houseplant to grow in any home. They have a pretty wide range of lighting conditions from tolerating low light conditions to very bright spots. Filtered indoor light is ideal—such as through a sheer curtain in front of a sunny window—or a semi-shade spot is the perfect place for them. Never place a dracaena plant in direct sun, as the rays will scorch its foliage.

Dracaenas require less water than most houseplants. Water them about once a week and make sure the top of the soil is dry before watering again. It’s important to have them in a pot with a drainage so the water doesn’t sit at the bottom of the pot—that will cause root rot.

Drooping or yellowing leaves could indicate over-watering or poor drainage. Don’t get concerned if you notice the bottom leaves beginning to turn yellow and fall. It is normal for dracaena to shed leaves in order to grow new ones.

Like any houseplant, pest and disease are sometimes a part of owning an indoor plant. Luckily, dracaenas are generally free from serious insect and disease issues. Keep an eye out for such creepy critters like mealybugs, spider mites and scale as those are the most common. Don’t freak out though, because you can treat those with Bonide Insecticidal Soap and that should take care of them.
