Houseplant Trends for 2022: Our Top 10 Houseplants for the New Year

The houseplant craze that started pre-pandemic, has grown faster than a pothos in perfect conditions. And this trend isn’t going away any time soon.

As people have become more comfortable with their botanical care-taking abilities, they have begun to explore and experiment with more exotic, more rare, and more sizable varieties of indoor plants.

Below is City Floral’s prediction of the hottest houseplant trends for 2022.

Philodendran Micans

Philodendron Micans

Micans is a lovely variety of philodendron that has purple-flushed green leaves with a satin-like texture. They are hard to find, but easy to grow, and are perfect for offices and homes with medium light.

Sansevieria

Sansevieria (snake plant)

Sansevieria houseplants are easy to grow and nearly indestructible. They will thrive in either very bright light or darker corners of the house. An ideal container plant, it is excellent in a grouping and will grow equally well on the floor or on tabletop displays. Perfect for any office building or home with a little florescent lighting.

Peperomia

Peperomia

The peperomia is an interesting houseplant that is almost a cross between a regular houseplant and a succulent. They are non-toxic to your pet which makes them perfect to place on a coffee table or end table that your pet may have access to.

Rex Begonias

Rex Begonia

Rex begonias have asymmetrical leaves, often with unique colors of variegation and rough edges. Begonias are semi-tropical and require about 50% humidity, as well as bright indirect light to look their best. The Jurassic series of these begonias are especially beautiful, and will add unique interest to your collection.

Ferns

Boston Fern

Fern houseplants are easily one of the most loved houseplants, possibly because of the huge variety available, as well as their lush beauty. They have lacy fronds and a classic texture that works great in any home design. Ferns look wonderful when mixed together, but also look great combined with almost any houseplant.

Satin Pothos

Satin Pothos

The Silver Satin pothos plant bears beautiful, dark green heart-shaped leaves decorated with irregular silver spots. It’s excellent in hanging baskets or climbing up a moss or wood totem. It is super easy to grow, easy to propagate, and they look beautiful with little effort. Pothos do not require special care–they tolerate low light, low humidity, and the occasional missed watering. These are perfect for office buildings because they grow just fine under florescent lighting.

Hoyas

Hoya

Something new for 2022 is the flowering houseplant trend. Hoyas make a fun flowering plant with their colorful clusters of tiny waxy blooms. There is something very satisfying about taking good care of a plant and being rewarded with a beautiful burst of flowers–it’s like your plant is telling you they’re happy!

Peace Lily

Peace lily

Peace lily houseplants are a common houseplant that create beautiful white blooms when placed in high-light situations. It will tolerate low-light areas, but it will not bloom as much.
