Tropical Houseplants & Citrus
A Little Work and A Lot of Sunshine!
At City Floral Garden Center, we can show you how you can use tropical plants and citrus trees in the Colorado climate, or satisfy your need for the feel of home if you have just moved here from a warmer climate.
Create a Tropical Oasis
Many people use tropical plants as beautiful focal points on their patios for seasonal color in the summer. In sunny Denver, our hot summer climate is perfect for tropical bloomers like hibiscus, mandevilla, bougainvillea, jasmine, agapanthus, citrus, and many more.Â
Using a tropical plant as a center in a pot brings height and structure to the planting, not to mention the eye-catching blooms that they provide. Try underplanting tropical plants with blooming annuals for a sophisticated look in your pots.Â
From April to July, we are stocked with all kinds of tropical plants ready to go outdoors. Just don’t forget to feed these hungry plants plenty of bloom-boosting fertilizer!

Winter Care for Tropical Plants and Citrus Trees
We know Colorado weather can bring surprises (snow in spring, 70-degree days in winter, and so much more), so what do you do when the temperature begins to drop? If you have a warm spot in your house that receives at least four hours of direct sun, then you can successfully keep your tropical plants and citrus trees alive and winter-over your tropicals indoors. Before you do this, keep in mind these tips on cultivating tropicals and citrus:
- Make sure your plants and flowers are free of bugs before introducing them into your home. We recommend a systemic pesticide to all blooming tropicals when they are in a home.
- Give your tropical plants a good pruning, 6-8 inches, to encourage new growth.
- Be patient, even plants need some rest. Plants will grow slower in the winter even when indoors.Â
- Fertilize your tropical and citrus plants often and watch them grow! Fertilize half as often indoors as you fertilize outdoors in the growing season.
