ZZ Plant Features

The ZZ plant is by far the toughest houseplant on the block. It can survive most things and is perfect for those who travel a lot or forget they even own houseplants. Just because it’s tough and easy to take care of doesn’t make it an ugly plant. This plant is quite stunning with it thick, waxy dark green leaves. Depending on the variety you choose, this plant will grow quite big. It may take awhile being that it is a very slow-growing plant.

Light

ZZ plants aren’t all that particular in the amount of light they get each day, which is one of the reasons it’s an easy houseplant. They do well in those low light to dark areas of your house, and they do even better when set in indirect bright light. It’s best to avoid direct sunlight because it is a low-light houseplant, and direct sun can scorch the leaves.

Water and Soil

When watering a ZZ plant, it’s always best to give it less water. It’s because this plant does better when under-watered than over-watered. Over-watering will cause stem and rhizome rot. Once that happens, it’s challenging to come back. The rule in watering a ZZ plant is to allow the soil to become completely dry between watering. It’s also helpful to plant the ZZ plant in a well-draining potting mix that contains perlite or vermiculite. We suggest using Fertilome Ultimate Potting Mix to have everything you’ll need for successfully growing indoor and outdoor plants.

Fertilizer

ZZ plants do like to have a little extra boost every couple of months. Feeding them with a well balanced water-soluble fertilizer will ensure that they get all the nutrients to help them grow big and strong. You’ll only really need to feed them four times throughout the year.

Pet Friendly

The ZZ plant, like most houseplants, are mildly toxic if eaten. That means it may cause some mild discomfort when eaten. Keep away from animals and children.
