Caring For Hardy Shrubs

Caring for hardy azaleas, rhododendrons, true holly, heather and Japanese maples:

Hardy varieties of the above-mentioned shrubs are available for the Denver market. Micro-climates in our city and in our own landscapes make perfect sites for these shrubs.

In general, plant holly, heather, and rhododendrons in partial summer and winter shade. An East or North exposure works well. They all require an acidic environment, so use plenty of Canadian Sphagnum Peat Moss and an acidic fertilizer. Mulch heavily and make sure you water deeply during dry winter months.

Evergreens, such as holly and rhododendrons, will benefit from a spraying of “Wilt-Pruf” in November and again in February. This aids the leaves by slowing down winter drying due to winds and the low angle of the sun.

Hardy azaleas and Japanese maples lose their leaves in the winter but still need winter protection from the sun and wind. Mulching the roots and wrapping branches with burlap after the leaves fall is a great help to these plants. Fertilize in May, June, and July with a water-soluble acid fertilizer.

Follow these suggestions to keep your shrubs healthy and happy. Please ask us any questions and let us know how we can help!
