The Zygopetalum orchid is a genus of twenty species native to Central America. They are exotic new world orchids that grow in a cool rainforest environment. These flowers are fragrant with spots and stripes of purple, green, and brown.
Zygopetalum orchids need to be placed in bright, filtered light. Make sure they aren’t placed in full sun as that will burn the plant. Dark green leaves indicate that it’s not getting enough light.
Zygopetalum orchids need water at least once a week, more often in warmer weather and less in the winter. Never allow the plant to stand in water because this will cause the roots to rot.Â
Zygopetalum orchids prefer cooler temperatures but above 45 degrees. It may be kept outside as long as there is no chance of frost or scorching days.Â
Feed Zygopetalum orchids every two weeks with a high nitrogen fertilizer from January to July. Use a low nitrogen fertilizer every two weeks from August to December.
When Zygopetalum orchids are potted, make sure to plant them loosely to allow for good drainage and airflow around the roots. Always make sure the newest growth is touching or slightly below the top of the medium. Repotting should be done when new growth is showing and during the temperate seasons, spring or fall.
Hydrangeas do well in partially shaded areas like under a large tree or on the side of a house. They like to receive sun in the morning, and the partial shade is in the heat of the afternoon. In Colorado, too much full sun will cause them to get sunburned.
Hydrangea shrubs need to have well-draining soils that is rich in organic matter. Most Colorado soils will benefit from the addition of peat moss and compost that helps retain moisture. The pH determines the colors of the blooms. Acidic soil will give you blue flowers, and alkaline soil gives you pink flowers. Â
If hydrangea shrubs are given too much high-nitrogen fertilizer, they may grow full and lush, but there will be fewer flowers. If the soil is rich, fertilizer is not needed. Otherwise, a light application in March or April may be warranted.
Make sure to water your hydrangea shrubs regularly. Those big blooms require a lot of water to stay lush and full. About one inch of water throughout the week is ideal. If they receive more sun give them at least two inches during the hotter summer days.
