July Gardening Tips & To-do’s

Gardening in July is where the fun happens. Everything has been planted and is looking stunning (hopefully). Now’s the time to make sure your flowers stay blooming, your vegetables are ready for harvest, and your garden stays beautiful with a couple of helpful tips from City Floral.

We’ve compiled a few important gardening to-do’s and tips to help you get those plant babies through the heat of July and August.

Deadhead, Deadhead and more Deadheading

It happens every summer, there’s a peak part of the season where it seems everything is in full bloom at once. Shortly after that those beautiful blooms start to wilt and don’t look as pretty as they once were. Time to grab some clippers because we need to get—deadheading!

Deadheading means you are removing the spent blooms from a plant, so it doesn’t waste precious energy trying to set seeds. This will help the plant put its best effort into producing more beautiful flowers, which is what we all want.

Coddle those Tomatoes

Tomato plants in July will always need a little TLC because by this point, they are either producing or just about ready to. If they look like they are struggling, pinch back those little suckers responsible for stealing energy from its most important task—producing fruit. After all you’re not growing a tomato plant for the leaves.

Tomatoes need a lot of water, so making sure they get water everyday is important. You can tell when they aren’t getting enough water because the leaves will curl slightly. Give them a little fertilizer with enough water and watch them go!

Add Annuals

When your garden starts to wane in the summer heat, adding annuals is the easiest way to add that color back in. With their bright blooms and fast-growing capabilities annuals just make sense and will make you love your garden come late summer!

Just Keep Weeding

Not much else to say here, but if you’ve kept up with the weeding all season you are probably winning at this point. Just continue to pull those weeds because you don’t want the double hit of heat and weeds to choke out your plants!
