How to Make a Fall Porch Pot

Happy autumn! Time to Freshen up those window boxes, patio and porch pots for the fall season! You’ll find everything you need on our annuals patio for a gorgeous fall porch pot plus beautiful new outdoor pottery to compliment your autumn plants.

Use the thriller, filler, spiller rule to create a show-stopping potted display for fall:

Thriller

A centerpiece plant that’s a real showstopper. These are colorful, big, bold plants with height and texture that wow. Place them at the center or back of your display, depending on the type of container and how it will be viewed. Flowering plants like showy Garden Mums or Rudbeckia, foliage plants like Mahogany Splendor Hibiscus, and Ornamental Grasses are all great options as fall thrillers.

Filler

Mounded plants that help fill out your container. Place these around or in front of your thriller plant (depending on the container), but leave room for your spillers! Pansies, Ornamental Peppers, Coleus, Coral Bells, and Flowering Kale all make excellent fillers for fall. You can even incorporate pumpkins into your pots!

Spiller

Last but not least, add in your spillers to anchor your display. These are your trailing plants that will hang over the edge of the container. Pots viewed from all sides should have spillers placed on all sides while containers viewed from the front need spillers placed in front. Use Sedge or Creeping Jenny for your fall porch pot displays.
