Moss poles are a great way to train houseplants to climb upward instead of growing outward, something that can be particularly helpful in small spaces and of course, give you more room for more plants! Moss poles can provide support and offer a little structure so that your aroid houseplants have something to grab onto. Plus, when the aerial roots of many of these plants start growing onto a moss pole, they will develop even larger leaves as the plant matures.

There are many houseplants that love to climb including Heart-leaf philodendrons (Philodendron hederaceum), Satin pothos (Scindapsus pictus), Philodendron micans, Monstera adansonii, and Rhaphidophora decursivas.

While some, such as a Monstera deliciosa, might reach a point in their growth where a little support might seem the most tidy and obvious solution, other smaller-leaved plants can be left to trail or be trained up a moss pole or trellis. It’s really just a matter of personal preference depending on how you want to let them grow in your space.

Whether you choose to keep these plants cascading down from a high shelf or climbing up a wall or other support, there’s no wrong move.
