Where do you start when planning your new water garden? How about here:

  1. Most importantly, do all of your planning before you start digging.
  2. If possible, select a site with at least six hours of direct sunlight.
  3. Select a site for your water garden that has high visibility. Pick a spot that can be seen from as many places as possible, including inside the house. The water garden is a 12-month garden.
  4. Avoid trees when possible. Leaves can create a problem in the winter.
  5. Avoid a windy area. The wind can knock pots over and destroy plants.
  6. Avoid areas which collect run-off water. Chemicals from lawns and dirt will collect in your pond and cause problems.
  7. Select a material based on cost AND also ease of installation. Pond materials include pre-formed fiberglass and sheets of PVC or Butyl liners.
  8. Make sure electrical outlets are installed and/or easily accessed if they are required for your garden.
  9. Check all local codes and ordinances.
  10. BIGGER IS BETTER. The biggest complaint we hear is that people wish they had made the pool bigger.
  11. Select plants with the total landscape in mind. Complement pool plants with surrounding plantings or use them to complement other plants.
  12. Do not overload the pool with fish. See our stocking suggestions here.
  13. Lastly, consider the depth. The depth of the pool is important if plants and fish are to be overwintered. Minimum depth should be 24″ for plants and 31″+ for fish. Place plants at the bottom of the pool for overwintering.

Once you’ve planned and installed your water garden, sit back and enjoy it. It will certainly be the focal point of your landscape and it doesn’t hurt to have a seating area by your pond. You will surely want to relax and admire your handiwork!
