The Best Lavender for Denver

The lavender plant is a versatile asset to your garden. Aromatic, water-wise, and colorful, lavender was originally from the Mediterranean region but now grows throughout the world. While lavender is widely available, it’s essential to consider Colorado’s unique growing climate when selecting the correct lavender plant.

Hardy lavender, which acts as a perennial, thrive in Colorado’s hardiness zones 5 through 7.

For Colorado, English lavender is a great option. English lavender plants can bloom twice in a single season and there are plenty of varieties to choose from depending on the size and color preferred.

How to Care for Your Lavender

Lavender plants can be planted from spring to fall, with excellent results obtained for plantings in the fall. Be sure to consider the size of the mature lavender as decide on where your lavender plant will thrive in your garden. Lavender plants like full sun and alkaline soils making it an ideal perennial for your landscape!

Lavender is typically drought tolerant once established. As with all new plantings, plan on watering regularly to help the lavender roots regenerate and establish themselves, which will be one to three times each week. After this initial care, mature lavender requires watering every two or three weeks.

Lavender likes being pruned! Prune each spring when green leaves start to appear at the base of the plant, removing about one-third of the top. Lavender are woody plants, and this will keep your plant fresh, younger looking, and more fragrant.
