In gardening, as in all worthy endeavors, the best things come to those who wait. Planting perennials now can provide fall color, winter interest and will give your plants a head start for beautiful and healthy plants next spring and summer.
Warm soil temperatures, cooler temperatures and less intense sunlight in the autumn will allow perennials to establish themselves more easily. Fall is when plants direct more energy into root growth and this helps the plants establish more quickly.
Remember that all new plantings need adequate moisture. Although we typically have more rain in the fall, keep an eye on the soil moisture level of your new perennials as well as your established perennials, shrubs & trees.
Here are some examples of late season perennials with amazing fall color:
- Sedum ‘Autumn Joy’
- Globe thistle
- Gayfeather (aka blazing star)
- Zauschneria (Hummingbird flower)
